Exporting and importing models allows administrators to back up, migrate, clone, and share virtual desktops easily.
This article provides a detailed guide on the process, benefits, and best practices for importing and exporting models through Cloud Manager.
A model is the parametrization of all the characteristics that we can give to a VM. The ability to import and export these models is essential for several reasons:
Facilitating the creation of models: Quickly deploy new models based on existing templates speeding up the process.
Backup and Recovery: Secure critical models by exporting them for backup ensuring they can be restored in case of failure.
Migration: Transfer models between environments or data centers facilitating migration.
Collaboration: Share models between teams or departments, promoting standardization.
Exporting a model through Cloud Manager involves creating a copy of a model or template of your choice, which can then be stored, transferred, or archived. Here is the process.
In Cloud Manager, choose the model you want to export and go to the Edit menu.
2. Click on the three vertical dots on the top right corner of the edit menu and select Export Built-In. This will trigger the download of a file with extension type .vdimodel
Follow these steps to successfully import a built-in model into your environment.
Ensure that you have the model file saved on your local machine. This file may be provided by your IT department. The file should have a .vdimodel extension type.
Find the following directory where model files are stored within the installation folder.
This is the specific folder where Cloud Manager looks for model files to import.
Copy the model file you obtained earlier and paste it in the directory that you located in the previous step. Make sure that the file is directly placed in this folder and not within any subfolders.
Launch Cloud Manager in your system and go to Create a new VDI model.
After choosing your cloud provider, the Wizard will now list the newly added model for import.
Follow the Wizard instructions to finalize the import process.
To ensure a smooth and efficient import/export process, follow these best practices:
Consistent Naming Conventions: Use clear and consistent naming conventions for exported models to avoid confusion when importing them later.
Regular Backups: Regularly export and back up critical models to prevent data loss and ensure quick recovery in case of failure.
Test Before Deployment: Always test imported models in a non-production environment before deploying them to ensure compatibility and stability.
Documentation: Maintain documentation of the export/import process, including settings and configurations, to streamline future operations.
